Planetary Surface Tools

Ultrasonic Drill Tool:

The Ultrasonic Drill Tool (UDT) is a European Space Agency funded project, to develop a device for ultrasonically-assisted drilling of planetary rocks. The tool transforms low displacement oscillations in a transducer into higher displacement vibration at the tip, which effectively cuts into rocks. Benefits of the UDT compared to conventional rock drills:

  • Low axial (thrust) force required
  • Lower power consumption than conventional percussion drilling
  • The possibility of operation from far less massive and stable drill platforms
  • Low drill bit wear
  • Good material removal rates
  • Potentially higher efficiency
  • Smaller envelope
  • Low sensitivity to axial (thrust) force variations, which is very significant when considering an autonomous, relatively flexible drilling platform

Rock Preparation Tool

The Rock Preparation Tool (RPT) is designed to remove the weathered rind of planetary rocks, so that a fresh, clean and flat surface is exposed for instruments to analyse. There are two types of tool being investigated, one is ultrasonically actuated, the other uses a more conventional cutting mechanism.
